first tooth
Today I happened to be feeling in Alexis' mouth and there it was...her first tooth (on the bottom front). I tried to sneak a peek at it all day (because I could feel that it had broken through the gums) but I couldn't because her tongue kept getting in the way and she wouldn't let me move it. Right before bed time I finally got a quick glimpse. I don't check her mouth for teeth often and she wasn't extra fussy or whiny so I had no idea it was there!

9 months!
Alex gets more and more fun the older she gets. It is amazing to see how fast she learns and develops new skills. Here is what she has been up to. She...
*says dada and mama (but not at anyone/anything in particular)
*is rocking on all 4's (sometimes she tries to lunge herself forward but she lands on her tummy with a thud making her upset)
*moves backwards very well
*loves to play games with us--Ryan will say "snuggle baby" and she will lay her her down and when he says "up baby" she brings her head up.
*loves to eat flavorful food--we have been really working on getting her to eat for a couple of months now. In the past we would bring out the baby food and she would literally shut her lips tight and move her head side to side away from the spoon. On the rare occassion we got something in her mouth she would look stressed and gag. Darcy's mom, Judy (a pediatric speech patholgist), has been making regular visits giving me suggestions and showing me techniques to help (of course, Alex performs better for Judy). Our friend Lee (another pediatric speech pathologist) has also given us advice and bought her special "mouth toys". She is doing much better now! Opening her mouth and wanting more food--however, she loves adult food (chili, salmon, homemade ragu, eggs with pesto sauce) and will not take typical baby food. Good thing I never made too much baby food!
*can drink out of a straw (although she really just loves water--if she finds out we put breast milk in it she won't drink very much--we need to continue to work on this)
*can pick up Cheerios with her fingers and get them into her mouth
*loves to swing and swim
*is a champion sitter (her favorite position of choice when she is not being held)
*loves to read--especially touch and feel books. She can be entertained by this for over an hour (we have invested in purchasing more touch and feel books just to keep our interest maintained).
*does really well going for walks. She easily stays in the stroller for 1-2 hours and also likes to be carried in a pack on our backs.
*still is very interested in Lacey.
*sleeps 11-13 hours at night (sometimes straight through but usually only wakes up 1 times--after 10 or 11 hours to be fed--then goes back to sleep)
*is a catnapper--takes 2-3, 45 minutes naps a day
*is really good at doing complex physics problems. She is working on one to do with quantum physics right now!

my friend mila
It was so fun to have Darcy and Mila visit from the deep, dark south (Lousianna) :) We got lots of time to visit and play. We even went to the zoo--which wiped Alex out!

3 moms in chehalis
For mother's day, Ryan, Alexis and I went on a morning hike in Tryon Creek. Then John and Marian (they were visiting in Portland), Ryan, Alex, and I drove up in the afternoon to Chehalis to meet my parents and my grandmother. Why Chehalis everyone asks? It is approximately the half way point for Tacoma and Portland. Ryan found a fun restaurant t eat at off the beaten path. It was fun to see our family.

johny becomes a beaver believer
Congratulations to John who was accepted to the OSU graduate school of engineering! We are very excited for him and Marian--especially because they will be so close to us! We went down to Corvallis with them on Saturday to explore their new hood.

bend
The four of us (Ryan, Lacey, Alex, and I) went to Bend to visit my crazy brother and sister-in-law.
We had such a fun time. Alex loved spending time with Ryan and Alanna. Currently, they are renting a house in downtown Bend. However, they bought a house (2 miles from downtown) and get to move in May. It is super cute in a very fun neighborhood.

We went on a lot walk while we were there--exploring the various parks, neighborhoods, and trails. We had great weather (it was a little weird that when we arrived in Bend it was snowing and 45 degrees). Lacey especially loved the river. Luckily, Ryan, my brother, was able to walk with her on leash so she didn't jump in at the rapidy parts. Ryan (Lacey's dad) is thinking about training her for dock jumping :) And then, of course, there was rolling in the dirt.
We made really yummy food and ate at really great restaurants. Our favorite was called The Victorian--breakfast was excellent. The last day we were there we relaxed along the river--yes it was even warm enough for Ryan to take off his shirt.
Congrats to Chaco (Ryan and Alanna's dog) who we recently learned was accepted to be an official geese herder at the Bend parks! We can't wait to see him in action.
